The Samsung HL-T5687S DLP Rear Projection may be the perfect alternative to high priced LCD or Plasma screens. At around $2400, you get a good screen size with a screen picture that rivals the flat panels. The HL-T5687S features a high-end, sleek design with an extremely thin black bezel (border surrounding the actual screen). It’s about what you’d expect as far as physical dimensions and depth. Many rear projection manufacturers are reducing the dimensions, especially the depth of rear projection TV’s to make them even more similar in size to flat panels. One of the great perks of owning a Samsung DLP TV is their unique LED light source. Most DLP TV’s use a single bulb. Samsung introduced 3 LED lights; red, blue and green to produce their impressive screen quality. These LED lights are said to last MUCH longer at 20,000 hours versus the 3,000 hours that the standard bulbs last. If that wasn’t enough, Samsung’s LED light source also reduce the “rainbow effect” that can plague DLP rear projection TV’s. Althought the Samsung HL-T5687S is an overall impressive TV, it has a few negatives that you may be wary of. The HL-T5687S TV’s biggest issue is a noticeable “hot spot” in the middle of the TV. Most rear projection TV’s have “hot spots” in the center of the TV where the picture is a little brighter but on this Samsung set it is a more noticeable. It especially stands out during dark sequences of TV shows or movies. There are a few image options that were not included on the HL-T5687S that would have been nice like color temperature controls and picture-in-picture but not enough to make a negative impression.
