The VIZIO VP50 HDTV is a 50″ plasma HDTV that offers you high-definition display at 720p and 1080i for a great price – just under $1,500. Most 50″ plasmas come in well over $2,000 and up. Vizio may not be the immediate brand that comes to your mind when it comes to high definition displays, but they are gaining market by offering very decent HDTVs at price points less than the other big names. The VP50 displays good picture quality, and can display 6,144 shades of grays in a color gamut of 231 billion colors. The plasma comes in a stylish silver and black gloss finish, and comes with an integrated TV tuner and speakers that produce excellent sound.

The set also features a 10-bit color level that Vizio calls VIZIO Color Vision (VCV), and includes a complete rear-panel jack-pack which allows multiple ways to connect the display. In our tests, the VP50 performed video processing admirably, and even bettered some of the earlier brand names display we tested. It also performed very well when connected to a computer using VGA. The only complaint we have is that the blacks may be a tad on the low sides, and the set runs slightly hot, but it is a small price to pay when you consider what this display retails for. The picture isn’t the absolute best we’ve seen, but the feature set, connectivity options, screen size and price more than make up for it. If you’re in the market for a solid 50″ plasma TV, then the Vizio VP50 comes across as a very viable alternative at a good price point.
