I just purchased this TV from samsclub. WOW!. It has mindblowing 240hz processing. Picture quality is excellent.
I have never purchased a better product. It blows my father – in- laws Toshiba away, for HALF the price! I wish I had purchased it sooner!
Don’t buy a Vizio. I had mine for 15 months. 3 months past the warrents when the panel went out. Vizio would not help. The repair shop said Vizio would not help them either. Vizio claimed the don’t make the part to fix my TV. Now I have a $1,000 42″ paper weight called Vizio.
Tony you’re a moron for not buying an extended warrantee…. did you save money in the long run?
Did you purchase an extended warranty? Many people tend to spend about 1000 dollars on a tv, but don’t bother to dish out a couple of hundred more to insure their TVs. I have had an older 42″ Vizio plasma, and as an electrical engineer I know that electronics are not 100% efficient, so when it had a sound issue after the manufacture’s warranty I was covered with no problem. The repairman came and fixed it in less than a week. I had to deal with Sony for about one month and a half before I got any service!!! And this is a “known” name brand!!!
Clearly the unknowledgeble person here is Rick. Tim have you really thought this through? How do you think the warranty people can make 90% profit when they sell an extended warranty. If you want to buy it for peace of mind by all means buy it.. If your buying the extended warranty to save money 1 in 10 people come out a head. What percent of the 100,000+ units of this TV Vizio sold had defects in the first 3 years? After 2 years how expensive will a comparable TV like this really cost. Half as much? Maybe in 3 years it will even be obsolete?
I tried to post my review on VIZIO’s site but they refused to publish it – why??
The SV421XVT is an excellent TV with amazing picture. The remote is also very good with backlighted buttons and lots of functions.
However, so far I find several disappointing functions:
There is no TV Guide like other competitors, the Guide button only gives the same banner info like the Info button, and not a listing of all the local digital channels.
The PIP/POP function only works with different inputs and not the same input, for example, you cannot watch two local channels at the same time.
Also there is no clock, but the time zone is an item in the menu.
Hopefully, this TV will be reliable and last as others have reported problems.
How many people spend $1000 every 3 years on a new tv? Even if the technology is obsolete, the company replaces it with a newer model if they cannot repair the old one. In either event, a tv will surely cost more than the $129 for a 3 year extended warranty . In the end, most people will not end up using the warranty because the tv manufacturer would go out of business from the repair costs and bad reviews of thier products, butI’d hardly categorize that as “wasted money”. Do you have health insurance?

There is no clock to show the time on program info but the time zone is an item in the menu which is ridiculous.
The available screen formats – Panoramic, Zoom, Full and Stretch are not as good as Sony as they stretch too much horizontally making everyone too short and fat.
Hopefully, this TV will be reliable and last as others have reported problems.
I just purchased this TV the other day. I have to say I’m very happy with it! The picture is really good! The price…unbeatable! Got it for around 1100$ with the 2 year extended warranty, so I’m not worried about it at all! I’ll just enjoy it because it is a really nice TV. The 240hz is amazing when watching full 1080p bluray movies! The difference is so remarkable! PS3 looks 100x better than it did on my 37′ phillips! Which crapped out in under 2 yrs! Didn’t have the warranty though! Overall, Vizio is a good name that is gaining a lot of ground on the competition. While Sony and Samsung make excellent products, Vizio is right on their tale producing excellent products that cater to the more budget minded people! I recommend this TV, it really is a great buy!!
Costco adds a year onto the warranty for a total of 2 years. Tony and A. Chong’s post about disappointing functions appear all over the internet reviews under different names. What’s up with that?
I’m thinking about buying this brand (the new LED/LCD 55″) and a warranty may not be a bad idea if I do. It seems on every site I find Vizio has as many bad reviews as good. An extended warranty may be a good idea if your going with this brand. The bad reviews are not like the ones above… The ones I see are about the TV working for a year or so then breaking. It seems even though the tech for a great picture has improved the durability has taken a sharp drop( telling you all something you don’t know lol). I still have 20-30ish inch color tube TV in the garage that works as good as the day I got it 20 years ago.
Sams Club – $848
3 year extended warranty – $79.03, Goes into effect after the 1 year manufacturers warranty expires. In house service. If they can’t fix it, they’ll replace it or cut you a check for the purchase price.
If you buy any new piece of electromic equipment and you don’t use the heck out of it for the first three months you deservre whatever you get. 99% of all defects show in the first 1000 hours of use. The effective life of one of these sets is 60 to 75 thousand hours with peak performance during the first 30 thousand and a gradual waning of performance over the remaining life. All service contracts protect is the profits of the people selling them. And to the fellow that said that they pay on 1 in 10 guess again. They pay on 1 in 250. I was a service mgr (and EEE) for those of you that understand and these figures are from real life actual results not a figure I pulled out of my ass.
Hi, I am currently researching this TV and relying on several sites with reviews to help in my decision. I can not afford a more expensive model and want some bang for my buck..also considering the fact that more expensive TV’s also have problems…and technology is quick paced.
I am posting this in response to an earlier review written by Tony Janowicz . This model was not even available in late 2007/early 2008. I would like to review/compare apples to apples…not apples to lemons. Aforementioned..technology is fast paced…things change over time and kinks get worked out… there was no mention on the model that was having the problem. It definitely was not the SV421XVT..since it was not even available 15 months prior to the review date.
As a rule I do not buy extended warranties… if something is to go wrong then it is usually with in the first few months of full use….but technology that advances this quickly..and buying a product that has not yet had a chance to pass the test of time..I just may..IF I do decide that this is the product I purchase. SO, the above review I need to ‘throw out’..along with the ones that jumped in to review 5 minutes after the TV was set up and turned on.
Just had to get this out…now I feel better
Next time buy at Costco, 2 year warranty with free support and 90 days return with no questions asked. I had a Vizio plasma that developed some minor ghosting about a month prior to the end of the 2 years. Costco sent out a repair man who determined it was not repairable (parts no longer available) so the gave me a new Vizio LCD (not plasma) to replace it- and let me KEEP the plasma. How can you beat that?? I’ll be picking one of these up there this weekend.
Thank you “Warren”, finally someone that knows what they are talking about. I personally like to do a high rate burn in of my own on electronics in the first three months, if that does not kill it, then it should last for years without fault. I also plan on getting mine from Costco, they have the best price and extend the warranty to two years at no cost, plus they have a “no fee” , “no questions” return for 3 months policy.
the vizio 42 inch is awsome .got it 8 months ago and i love it. picture perfect and cheap at costco.i had a olevia 37 inch 60 hz that went out in a year and a half.i had warrenty and tadaaaaa they cut me a cheack for the price i paid then i got a good tv
We bought our SV421XVT flat panel from Sam’s Club in January and have had two issues with it.
First, like posted by others on the SV420 review page, the sound has been driving us nuts with fading out to where we can not here the TV until a commercial comes on and then we get blasted out. One thing we noticed is that if it does fade away it can be brought back by changing channels momentarily.
Tonight, as reccomended on the SV420 reviews I turned off both SRS functions with a very noticable increase in sound volume. We’ll have to see if this helps.
If not, we are going to try to take it back for exchange to a different brand under the extended warrenty.
The other issue, although it now seems to have gone away is that for the longest time the set smelled like it was on fire. Several times we searched the house for the fire but finally realised it was the TV. We almost took it back for that also.
Otherwise we like the TV. We bought this model specifically for the PIP, and did not have much choice of brands becuase of that.
But with the loss of the SRS I may take it back and upgrade to a Mitsubishi to get a TV that works as advertised. I don’t like being sold equipment with faulty features and the sound system, as shipped, is deffinately faulty.
Regarding the extended warrenty, my impression is that there are an abnormal amount of early failures with the flat panels, as compared to CRT TV’s so we did buy the extended warrenty, something I almost never do.
