Sony KDL-46VE5 Review: 46″ LCD HDTV

Up for review: Sony KDL-46VE5. The new KDL-46VE5 is part of Sony’s BRAVIA VE5-series Eco LCD HDTV’s. The VE5-series is equipped with plenty of power-saving options. As compared to conventional backlights that are used in other LCD models, the new Sony KDL-46VE5 incorporate a new Hot Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (HCFL) backlight technology which Sony claims will save up to 40 percent of power consumption.

The VE5-series models are called as Eco TV’s for their environmental friendly features. Like its other 2009 line up LCD models, the new VE5-series also surpasses Energy Star(R) 3.0 requirement standards. Loaded with many advanced features, the price of the Sony KDL-46VE5 is yet to be announced by the electronics major. This high end LCD HDTV is expected to available in market by spring 2009.

With 1080p native resolution, superior picture quality likely to be expected from the new Sony KDL-46VE5. In addition, it has Sony’s innovative Motionflow 120Hz processing technology. Hence crisper and sharper images minus any visual artifacts will be experienced. The 24p True Cinema feature will facilitate to watch movies in their true 24 frames per second. Although aspect and contrast ratio is not known as of now, but the light sensor feature of the new KDL-46VE5 will adjust the backlight in accordance with the ambient room light. The 46 inch screen makes an ideal TV watching for any size of room.

The new Sony KDL-46VE5 is one of the first LCD televisions to offer a zero-watt standby Energy saving switch which helps in saving power to nearly zero watts. The switch can be manually turned off when not in use and by simply turning it on, the LCD will be operational once again.

Another very interesting feature that Sony has added in the BRAVIA VE5-series LCD models is the highly innovative Presence Sensor. Often children in the household leave the TV unattended for a long time or even forget to turn it off while leaving the room. As a result, unnecessary power is consumed. But Sony’s presence sensor automatically turns off the picture when no one is present in the vicinity after a stipulated timeframe and hence saves power consumption.

Reviews show that with 4 HDMI inputs including 1 VGA, Component input; the Sony KDL-46VE5 LCD TV will have great compatibility for external connectivity. An additional a USB input is also there for playing audio files from a USB storage device. What’s more, the model is also compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Link modules including the BRAVIA Wireless Link, DVD Link and BRAVIA Input Link.
