Sony Bravia XBR-52HX900 Review: 52” LCD HDTV

Up for Review: Sony Bravia XBR-52HX900 LCD TV. With the HDTV market getting populated with TV models from different makes, the XBR-HX900 series from Sony has drawn popular attention for its new range of LCD models. The Sony Bravia XBR-52HX900 is the 52 inch LCD HDTV from the XBR-HX900 series that supports Internet widgets.

Featured with Full HD LCD panel, the Sony Bravia XBR-52HX900 can display every pixel of a 1080p video signal. Also it can display signals with lower resolution such as 1080i and 720 p. Along with Sony’s Motionflow Pro 240Hz processing, the model is capable of producing smoother and more natural images. Sony claims that the MotionFlow and the refresh rate used with this model are improved from its previous version. As the XBR-52HX900 is equipped with Full HD display, it can handle even the video signals produced by DVD players, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. Although the model is compatible with 3D Blu-ray standard, the users need to buy a transmitter and a pair of 3D glasses to enjoy the effect.

Along with LED Backlights the XBR-52HX900 offers local dimming which can dim the dark areas of the images to create deeper black.

That apart, there is a component and a composite video, along with one VGA input for connecting a computer. Sony doesn’t provide any DVI port. Users can purchase adaptors that convert a DVI output to HDMI one. The model has 5 analog audio inputs and an optical digital audio output. Users can watch videos from Amazon video or Netflix services when the TV is connected to home Internet connection through Ethernet cable. The USB port on the side of the display allows playing video and audio stored on USB thumb drive or any other device. The side ports also provide access to digital cameras and camcorders

Although the Sony Bravia XBR-52HX900 has a simple design, the front of the display is a single piece glass. Again, the screen is coated with Sony’s new OptiContrast coating which is meant to enhance contrast and reduce reflection. The stand of the display is a large metal strip that extends along the length of the body which creates a great look for the model. The speakers of the model are built into the stand. We purchased a 52inch Sony Bravia from Best Buy in Jan of 2008. In Dec of 2009 the T.V. started to display picture problems to which the picture was distorted and would adjust itself after about 10 min. After placing a call into the customer service dept of Sony on Dec 30, 2009, I was advised by the rep that I needed to trouble shoot a list of issues before they would do anything. As time happens, this issue with our T.V got worse and came to a head in July of 2010. The picture would no longer adjust itself and was just lines. After calling Sony on July 15, they explained that they are unable to do anything due to the warranty being expired as of Jan, 2010. When I explained that there is a documented call on both ends in Dec with an open claim they acknowledged this but again refused to do anything. After taking a day off of work July 30th, to further deal with this issue, they advised that they could not again do anything until I brought it to an authorized TV repair shop. After paying for the repair fee, (which I shouldn’t have had to pay) I was advised that it was the panel and it would be an estimated $2750.00 to fix. We were able to fax both this and a copy of my receipt to Sony. They then advised me that the only thing they could do was offer me a discount on a 2010 52in tv. They could sell it to me for $1475 plus tax. This is unacceptable. I do not buy quality products at that price ($2799.00) only to have them completely break down under 2-yrs. This issue should be resolved in its entirety because of my open claim in Dec of 2009. Sony is not honoring their Warranty nor there good name. They are selling faulty products to consumers that are unaware of the issues that can happen.
