JVC LT-40FN97 Review: 40” LCD HDTV

Up for Review: JVC LT-40FN97 LCD TV. This is one of the high-end TVs from JVC. It performs quite well and has excellent picture quality. It has the lowest price in its range and this is sure to be a great draw for the JVC LT-40FN97. There are certain issues with the black levels which need to be sorted out by the company as soon as possible if it wants to keep ahead of the existing competition. The front panel is quite decent with sleek and glossy black looks. There are two speakers under the display with the JVC logo shining in the middle. There is also a blue light indicating that the set has been powered on but this can be turned off if needed.

The remote is not one to be proud of. It’s fairly large and does not fit well in the hands. The backlit clicker is not placed in the best of positions and neither are the important buttons. The menu system is also not very impressive but the presence of picture-in-picture feature is a saving grace. The Freeze option can be used to stop one picture frame and start the other. The ATSC tuner gets hold of free-to-air signals and together with a CableCard slot is able to tune digital and HDTV stations.

JVC LT-40FN97 Features and Specifications Review:

  • 40” display
  • 1920 x 1080 resolution
  • 16:9 aspect ratio
  • 1000:1 contrast ratio
  • Progressive scanning
  • NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner
  • Universal remote control
  • 2 speakers
  • 2 HDMI

A review shows that there are 4 picture controls and 3 color temperature presets. It also has a flexible backlight control called Energy Saver mode. It can be reduced to produce better black levels. The Smart Sensor takes care of the intensity of light in the TV depending on the ambiance of the room. As far as the resolution is concerned, it cannot directly accept 1080p from a source but it can convert 1080i to 1080p.

If you sit directly in front of the TV then the picture quality is very good. But it tends to fade a bit at the edges. The viewing angles are acceptable but could have been better. But the performance of this HDTV is at par with any other HDTV in its range. If you have made up your mind to buy a JVC model then the JVC LT-40FN97 is the one for you. For a price of $3324.99 MSRP it is worthy of a second look.

The JVC LT40FN97 40-Inch 1080p Flat Panel LCD TV comes with a 12 month warranty, unfortunately for me it isn’t enough.

I’m in a pickle because there is a thin horizontal line right of center on the screen that appears on every channel.

We have really enjoyed this TV up until last night when we noticed the line. I called the service center and they explained they need $145 to come and assess the problem (they added that the assessment is deducted from the repair cost should you decide to have the unit repaired: How nice).

My last TV, a 14 year old Panasonic CRT is still working fine, never a problem. I guess I just expected this unit, with a number one Consumer Reports rating in its size category, would last a bit longer without a hitch.
