Insignia NS-L42X-10A Review: 42” LCD HDTV
Up for Review: Insignia NS-L42X-10A LCD TV. Although Insignia might not be the brand you might be enthusiastic about when you make up your mind to buy an HDTV, yet when you get a hard look at the different models on display, you will be allured by its looks and performance as compared to its price. It has all the good features offered by most HDTVs and still sells for only $850 MSRP which makes it a hot contender for the average consumer. Looking at the price, it is surprising that this TV has 1080p display resolution. The refresh rate is also 120 Hz which is quite exciting when you view the hot action sequences.
The design is quite different from the regular TVs that you see. In contrast to the striking finish put forth by most of the competitors, Insignia has gone for a matte finish with a simple design. The cured bottom of the bezel looks somewhat different along with the transparent outer edges. It may not catch your fancy but it is good enough for the price you pay. The clean look is interrupted by a tiny indicator light flashing the Insignia logo. This can also be turned off if it is disturbing to the eye. Insignia has not gone in for the “thin” look as the TV is quite bulky with a bulging middle. It is not at all meant to be hung on the walls. Placing it on its stand will be a much wiser decision.

The Insignia NS-L42X-10A has all the features that a good HDTV should have. It has 1080p display resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and also 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Consequently, the picture quality is great with improved black levels. The whites are pretty bright but there seems to be a lack of uniformity in the images. The color spectrum is good with many shades being available which paints a natural image whenever you see the TV. The viewing angle is not very great and the images can get hazy at the edges.
There are lots of HDMI ports to connect the high definition devices. But this HDTV lacks USB and Ethernet ports. Hence, you cannot see photos from the digital camera. But the inclusion of a handy remote makes navigation pretty simple. There are dedicated buttons for all the major functions. But perhaps Insignia could have done better to have put a fewer buttons on the remote to reduce the clumsiness. The TV itself rests on a swivel stand which can be turned around whenever you want to tweak the controls at the side and rear. On the whole, this HDTV is quite impressive and will measure up to your expectations. It will make a good buy.
