**Don’t forget to rate the iPhone at the bottom of this review!!
What better way to kick off YouReviewElectronics.com than with a review of the most talked about electronic gadget in the history of cell phones? The Apple iPhone has been rumored about for years now and has finally hit the shelves. Many analysts and experts were worried that it had no chance of living up to the hype that it had created but it is still blowing people away! If you’re living within 50 miles of a computer or TV, you’ve probably heard plenty about it and seen some pictures of its sleek appearance. Everyone talks about its revolutionary touch screen controls but we’re going to cover some of the other smaller details that you may not be aware of. Let’s dig in…
Yes, it can make and receive phone calls
The iPhone is so many devices rolled into one that tons of people are neglecting its killer features as an actual cell phone. Here are some basic specifications for the phone in general and some of its unique features in terms of cell phone use.
- GSM – The iPhone is a quad-band phone which means it can work at 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz for optimal call quality.
- Touch it – It’s most popular feature: the 3.5 inch widescreen multi-touch display.
- Hi-res – The unique screen has 480-by-320 pixel resolution at 160 dpi. Amazing screen quality for a portable device.
- Chameleon-like – This advanced screen runs the whole show by itself. The iPhone screen will detect when you switch the phone from portrait to landscape and adjust the picture accordingly. It has sensors that recognizes when you put it up to your face and shuts off the touch screen so you don’t accidently press some buttons. Lastly, it adjust the screens brightness based on the surrounding light to optimize battery life and visibility of the screen.
- Voicemail Revolution – One of the truly unique features o f the iPhone is its new voicemail features which allows you to pick the exact voicemail you’d like to listen to on your screen so you don’t have to wade through dozens of old voicemails.
- No crashes here - The iPhone runs on Mac’s OS X which is one of the most advanced operation systems available.
Apple has run into issues in the past with their iPod’s battery life but has worked hard to improve this small nuisance. The iPhone battery is built-in and features up to 8 hours of talk time, 250 hours of standby time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback and up to 24 hours of audio playback. Not bad.
Multi-Multi-Media
Cell phone manufacturers have been fighting to produce a phone that eliminates the need to carry multiple devices. Although many have done well, nobody has combined as many devices as the iPhone and made it look so sharp.
- Say iPhone! – The iPhone has a camera that is about what you’d expect. It comes with a 2 megapixel which about standard for a high-end phone. Nothing too fancy here, it takes pictures.
- iPod Killer – Microsoft’s Zune didn’t quite hold up to its “iPod Killer” expectations but with a 4GB or 8GB hard drive in the iPhone, you can carry enough songs to leave the iPod at home.
- Video Star – The iPhone supports all common types of video playback. Download the episode of The Office you missed from the iTunes store and catch up.
Internet To Go
Alright, this is where it’s going to get a little nerdy. The iPhone has some of the most exciting mobile Internet options available on any phone. Its online abilities are making it so you can leave that bulky laptop at home for short periods.
- Life-like – If you’ve ever surfed the Internet from a mobile phone before, you’ve come to realize that it’s a whole different Internet. With the iPhone, you’re actually using a rich HTML email client and Safari web browser; just like the one used on home computers and laptops.
- Googlified – Apple has teamed up with Google to incorporate some of its products like Google search and the incredible convenient Google Maps. You’ll never be lost again.
- Connected – You have 2 options to get online: EDGE or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi will allow you to connect at broadband speeds while AT&T’s EDGE network is not quite as quick. Data can also be transferred via USB 2.0 to computers. Bluetooth headsets are an accessory option.
What it should do
So the iPhone is all clouds, giggles, popsicles and all other things happy, right? Almost, but not quite. There are a few common features left out that left some cell phone users saying, “really, Apple?”. Here’s a list of what the iPhone doesn’t do:
- Connect to 3G. AT&T’s EDGE network is not nearly as fast as 3G. With such strong Internet features, the iPhone deserves a better network.
- Bluetooth Data Transfer - You can connect your Bluetooth headset to your iPhone but don’t try transferring any files to your home computer or friends. Aint happenin’.
- MMS - Cell phones have been able to send and receive picture messages for years now. The iPhone doesn’t include this standard feature. Why?
- Video Recording – Some other high end phones like Blackberry’s Pear don’t have the capability to record video. Possibly not a deal breaker for most people but with the awesome multimedia capabilities of this phone, it would’ve been nice.
- Battery replacement – Similar to the iPhone, the battery is not user replaceable. The battery appears and is quoted to have a great lifespan but some users like to have a backup battery for vacations where they may not have access to charge their phone.
AT&T may be the luckiest company of 2007. Reports claim that they have a long term agreement to be the exclusive provider of the iPhone. They are also able to charge higher monthly rates to those people who can’t live without an iPhone. If you’re lucky enough to find an iPhone at your local store, be ready to shell out $499 for the 4GB or $599 for the 8GB.
The iPhone is undoubtedly the most exciting gadget around. It has the ability to replace so many electronic devices that we carry around on a daily basis; not to mention all the people with iPhone envy that will be checking you out. For the average user, this phone is a dream. If you’re a PDA phone user, you may find that this is missing some of the features you require to be productive like 3G connection speeds. The iPod pricing and AT&T plan pricing still seem a little steep but Apple has had and will not have a problem moving the iPhone. Despite a few questionable oversights by Apple, the iPhone is here and rocking the cell phone market.

I give the iPhone a 5/5 because nobody is doing what they are. The screen features are one of a kind and its replaced my need to carry my iPod. My only complaint is wanting a larger hard drive. I think eventually that might be an option.
I agree with you on the hard drive Bryan. We withheld the fifth star just because of those basic features that are missing out. The phone is definitely one of a kind but I honestly use some of those things that Apple didn’t include on the phone.
I was kind of bugged that the iPhone doesn’t record video. Its not a feature that I use very often but it comes in handy every once in awhile. Other than that, the phone is by far the greatest cell phone Ive ever had and I’ve had quite a few.
